学英语需要多少词汇才够用呢?说法纷纭，我们常听的就是，活用几千词足够了。但是这只说对了一半，日常沟通或许几千词足够了，但是它对于外语学习者来说并不现实，我们在生活中几乎找不到只会几千词并且能把这几千词掌握好的人，反倒是词汇量很大的人对常见词的掌握会更好。

这与学习的反馈机制有关。一般来说，词汇量大的人阅读听力中遇到生词少，容易产生正反馈，有利于增加输入。而输入的增加使得他们有更多的机会接触到各种常见词用法，对这些词的理解也会更好。但对于词汇量比较小的人来说，他们在阅读和听力中会经常碰到生词，非常打击学习热情，在这种情况下要做到持续大量输入是很困难的。正所谓“取乎其上，得乎其中;取乎其中，得乎其下”。

词汇量不足会极大影响阅读和听力的输入质量。举个例子，

下面是马丁·路德·金的演讲 I have a dream 演讲稿片段。由于当时面对的听众是广大受教育程度不高的黑人底层民众，演讲稿会相对比较“平易近人”，以确保每个人都能够听懂。但这样的演讲稿仍然出现了不少“超纲词”。

上面加粗的大部分单词词频都落在前10000词以外，换句话说，如果你的词汇量不过万，那么你会有很大几率听不懂马丁·路德·金的演讲。

因此，仅仅掌握几千个常用单词并不够。我们需要的是更大的词汇量。那么，多大的词汇量才算“够用”呢?

可以看出，24岁左右的成年人词汇量中位数接近25000，考虑到词汇测试的误差，这一数字应该落在20000到25000区间。

因此，真正够用的词汇量应该尽可能接近或达到英语成年母语者的中位数水平，即在两万到两万五左右。当然，词汇积累并不是一件一劳永逸的事情，每个人的词汇量会随着英语学习时间的增加而不断增长，这是一个持续一生的过程。
